India’s 860 million-strong working population (15-64 years), the world’s largest, is beginning to age. Close to 18 million elderly in India are homeless.
Senior citizens living in poverty face abandonment by their own families as they cannot earn an income. Many a times, they are left with no choice but to beg to survive. At Shanti Sahyog, our mission to serve the poor and vulnerable is coming full circle. Starting with our pre-school, schooling, vocational and skills program, women empowerment through legal access and health services, our next goal is to build a home for elderly who have been abandoned by their families.
We have taken the first step towards realizing this vision by purchasing 500 sq yds of land in Sangam Vihar, New Delhi. The current structure that houses 8 elderly people (see pictures below), will be completely rebuilt to be able to provide shelter to many more vulnerable senior citizens who are in their last years.
But We Cannot Do This Alone!
Archigroup Architects are donating their expertise to help with the design and drawings of our envisioned Home. Rajiv Aggarwal, Director, Archigroup Architects, visited Shanti Sahyog Old Age Home location in Sangam Vihar, on 24 January 2021 to take the requisite measurements to make the blueprint. He also donated woolen sweaters to the inmates.
On 26 Jan 2021, Shanti Sahyog distributed sweets to the inmates to celebrate Independence Day.
