SHIVKALA'S STORY
Life for 40 year old Shivkala was a blur, preventing her from finding her way around and getting through daily life because of a cataract in her eyes. All it required was a simple laser procedure to restore her vision. But Shivakala did not have the means to access medical help. On 20th October 2007, medical help came to her in the form of a free Eye Camp organized by Shanti Sahyog in their Health Center, opposite Sudhar Camp slum, where she lived. Because of the operation, life for Shivkala is now a clear vision enabling her to regain her independence and seek out a brighter future for herself and her family. 9 others like Shivkala, benefited from cataract surgery and 387 other people found access to free medical treatment for a range of conditions that were debilitating their lives. A team of eight health care professionals diagnosed and treated the slum dwellers from Sudhar Camp and neighboring dwellings for optometric, gynecological, and diabetic conditions. 106 patients were prescribed and given free eye glasses and 10 cataract operations were performed in this Medical Camp.
